Toyota Prius import check

ZVW50 is the factory model code for the Toyota Prius, built for the Japanese market from 2015 to 2023. Other versions carry ZVW51, ZVW55 and ZVW52. Every genuine car has a chassis (frame) number that starts with its code, such as ZVW50-. That number is the one thing that links its Japanese history to its UK records.

Reading the ZVW50 chassis code

  • ZVW50 and ZVW51 are front-wheel drive; ZVW55 is the four-wheel-drive E-Four.
  • The earlier third-generation Prius is ZVW30.

Is it a genuine ZVW50?

Every fourth-generation Prius is a hybrid. If DVLA lists it as petrol only, ask the seller to get the record corrected: it affects tax and insurance.

Known problems to check on a ZVW50

  • Ask for a hybrid battery health check, and whether the battery has ever been replaced
  • Catalytic converter theft is common on Prius models in the UK: ask whether a cat shield is fitted
  • Japanese-market radio and sat-nav need a band expander or replacement in the UK

These are common issues for the model, not facts about any particular car. Ask the seller about each one.

Before you buy

  • Check the hybrid system warning lights stay off on a long test drive
  • Ask for the 12 V battery’s age: a weak one causes odd warning lights

The ZVW50 on a Japanese auction sheet

  • The sheet names the car プリウス (Prius). Look for the battery check or hybrid system notes some houses add.

Most imports were bought at a Japanese auction, and the inspector’s sheet records the grade, mileage and every mark on the body. Ask the seller for it, then run it through our auction sheet translator to read it in English and check the chassis number and mileage against the UK record.

Recalls in Japan for the ZVW50 family

Japan publishes every recall with the chassis numbers it covers. Run a recall check with the car’s chassis number to see whether any apply to it.

MOT record in the UK

Toyota Prius 1.8 (2016 to 2022)

  • 13% of 145,427 first MOT tests failed in 2024 and 2025, 36% lower than the UK average for cars of the same age.
  • Most common advisory: Tread depth: worn close to legal limit or worn on edge (9.4% of tests).
  • Most common failure: Wipers: does not clear the windscreen effectively (1.9% of tests).

Kilometres, miles and the first UK MOT

A ZVW50 sold new in Japan has a speedometer in kilometres. When it is imported, the speedometer is either converted to miles or left in km, and the first UK MOT should record whichever the dial shows. Mistakes here are common, and they’re where mileage problems hide.

We put the Japanese auction mileage and every UK MOT reading on one timeline and check the crossing: whether the readings agree after converting, whether the km figure was written down as miles, and whether the first UK reading is lower than the car had already done in Japan. See an illustrative example.

What we haven’t confirmed yet

We only state what we’re confident of. We haven’t yet checked these points about the Toyota Prius against a second source, so treat them with care:

  • We haven’t confirmed which grades use ZVW50 and which use ZVW51.
  • We haven’t confirmed ZVW52 for the plug-in Prius PHV.

Questions

What is the chassis code for the Toyota Prius?

ZVW50, with ZVW51, ZVW55 and ZVW52 for other engines or drive layouts. A Japanese-market Toyota Prius has a frame number that starts with its code, then a hyphen and a serial number. You’ll find it on the V5C and on a plate in the engine bay.

Which years was the ZVW50 built?

From 2015 to 2023, with the 2ZR-FXE (1797 cc naturally aspirated hybrid) engine and FWD layout.

What should I check when buying a ZVW50?

Ask for a hybrid battery health check, and whether the battery has ever been replaced. Catalytic converter theft is common on Prius models in the UK: ask whether a cat shield is fitted. Japanese-market radio and sat-nav need a band expander or replacement in the UK. Check the hybrid system warning lights stay off on a long test drive. Ask for the 12 V battery’s age: a weak one causes odd warning lights. Also check that the Japanese auction mileage lines up with the first UK MOT, because km and miles are easily mixed up.
