Has a U02 car been resprayed?

  1. Find the model plate and read the code. On the caution plate in the engine bay, next to EXT (the exterior paint). Codes are a letter and two digits, such as W37. If it says U02, the car left the factory in Phantom Black Pearl.
  2. Check the V5C. For Phantom Black Pearl it should say BLACK. Add the paint code to our free check and we’ll compare it with the DVLA record for you.
  3. Check the auction sheet. It should describe the car as black and usually prints the code. A sheet that says one colour with a code for another means the car was painted before it was sold in Japan. Our auction sheet translator flags that.
  4. Look for the old colour where a respray rarely reaches: the engine bay, door shuts, inside the boot lid and fuel flap, and under rubber seals. Phantom Black Pearl has a pearl finish, so look along each panel at an angle for a change in shade.

Questions

What colour is Mitsubishi paint code U02?

U02 is Phantom Black Pearl (ファントムブラックパール), a pearl black paint.

What colour should the V5C say for a car in U02?

The DVLA records a basic colour, not the paint name, so a car still in its factory Phantom Black Pearl should be registered as BLACK. Anything else suggests it has been painted a new colour, and the keeper should have told the DVLA.

Which models came in Phantom Black Pearl?

We believe the Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution VII to IX (CT9A) and Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution X (CZ4A) also offered it, but haven’t confirmed that yet. Other Mitsubishi models outside our model library used it too.
