Japanese car importers and specialists in the UK

UK companies in the motor trade with a Japan-related name, from the Companies House register: where each is based, when it was set up, and whether it’s still trading and filing on time. Use it to check who you’re buying from before you pay a deposit.

Companies House doesn’t record what a business imports or sells, so a listing means the name and registered business point to Japanese cars, not that the company is a confirmed importer. We check each one and leave out those that clearly aren’t, such as a minicab firm called Tokyo Cars.

Before you buy from an importer

  1. Check the company is active on Companies House and that the name on your invoice is the registered company, not just a trading name.
  2. Look at how long it has traded and whether its accounts are overdue. A new or late-filing company isn’t a bad sign on its own, but it’s worth knowing.
  3. Ask for the car’s Japanese export certificate and auction sheet, and check the chassis number matches the car and the V5C.
  4. Run the registration and chassis number through our free check for its MOT history, mileage readings and Japanese recalls.

Questions

How do I check a Japanese import dealer is a real company?
Search for the business on the Companies House register. Check the company is active, how long it has been trading, and whether its accounts are overdue. Then make sure the name on your invoice matches the registered company.
Which companies are in this directory?
Companies on the Companies House register with a Japan-related word in their name (such as JDM, Japan, Nippon or Tokyo) that are in the motor trade, either by the business type they registered or by a motor word in their name. Each is then checked, and ones that clearly aren’t Japanese vehicle businesses are left out. Companies House doesn’t record what a business actually sells, so a listing isn’t proof that a company imports cars, and many good importers have no Japanese word in their name, so the list isn’t complete either.
Does a listing mean the importer is recommended?
No. The directory only shows facts each company has filed with Companies House. It says nothing about the cars they sell or how they treat customers.
