Has a ES1 car been resprayed?
- Find the model plate and read the code. On the model plate (the “caution plate”) in the engine bay, usually on the bulkhead, next to COLOR. Some later models put a sticker on the driver’s door pillar instead. If it says ES1, the car left the factory in Yellow.
- Check the V5C. For Yellow it should say YELLOW or GOLD. Add the paint code to our free check and we’ll compare it with the DVLA record for you.
- Check the auction sheet. It should describe the car as yellow and usually prints the code. A sheet that says one colour with a code for another means the car was painted before it was sold in Japan. Our auction sheet translator flags that.
- Look for the old colour where a respray rarely reaches: the engine bay, door shuts, inside the boot lid and fuel flap, and under rubber seals.

Questions
What colour is Nissan paint code ES1?
ES1 is Yellow (イエロー), a yellow paint.
What colour should the V5C say for a car in ES1?
The DVLA records a basic colour, not the paint name, so a car still in its factory Yellow should be registered as YELLOW or GOLD. Anything else suggests it has been painted a new colour, and the keeper should have told the DVLA.
Which models came in Yellow?
Japanese catalogue colour listings include it for the Nissan 180SX S13 (RPS13). Other Nissan models outside our model library used it too.
